Organizations
ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) was founded in 1947 and is "a major force in advancing the skills of information technology professionals and students worldwide." Boasting 80,000 members, its Digital Library is an unparalleled source of information (but is open to subscribing members only).
The American Society of Indexers (ASI) is an "organization founded in 1968 to promote excellence in indexing and increase awareness of the value of well-written indexes." There are resources for those working in Web indexing, controlled vocabularies and thesauri.
ASIS&T (The American Society for Information Science and Technology) is "the society for information professionals leading the search for new and better theories, techniques, and technologies to improve access to information." Its Bulletin is an excellent source of scholarly resources. It sponsors a number of special interest groups, including SIGIA.
The Information Architecture Institute "is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to advancing and promoting information architecture. Founded in 2002, the Institute has over 800 members in 40 countries." It's still growing and offers and offers a variety of resources on its site.
The Interaction Design Group serves the needs of the IxD community by disseminating information on standards, best practices and guidelines; providing tools and other resources; publishing news and other information; and providing a job board, discussion forums and mailing list.
The Dublin Core Metadata Initiative® "is an open forum engaged in the development of interoperable online metadata standards that support a broad range of purposes and business models." If you're involved in metadata, you probably already know about this site. If not, it's time to get acquainted.
The Usability Professionals' Association (UPA) "supports those who promote and advance the development of usable products, reaching out to people who act as advocates for usability and the user experience." An outstanding site with lots of practical resources.
UXNet "was formed to help make connections between the people and organizations that represent User Experience disciplines, and to encourage interchange and cooperation." The organization is just getting started in its mission.
